3 Simple Hair Care Tips For Stronger And Healthier Locks

As hairdressers, we often get a lot of people asking how they can make their hair grow faster, stronger and healthier. The first recommendation is always going to be a healthy and nutritious diet. What we eat has a big impact on our overall health, and that is the same for the health of our hair. Although hair may be effected by various other factors, such as illness, genetics or pregnancy, the biggest impact on the state of our hair is usually diet.

Up your protein intake – your hair will love you for it.

Hair is predominately made up of a tough protein called keratin. As hair grows continuously, it needs a constant supply of high levels of nutrients to maintain healthy growth, however as it’s a non-essential tissue, it gets the last of what’s available. Therefore, if you are low in these essential minerals, vitamins and amino acids, your hair will unfortunately start to suffer the effects. The first step to improving your hair health and getting those shiny luscious locks is by increasing your intake of protein through good quality sources such as meat, fish, seafood, eggs, yoghurt, beans and pulses.

Consider taking a hair specific supplement for an extra boost.

If you want to give your hair some more love to ensure it’s looking its best, taking a supplement may greatly assist. The one we recommend is the Swisse ultiboost hair, skin and nails supplement as it is a good quality supplement, containing silicon, vitamin C, zinc, iron, biotin and St Mary’s thistle. It is also enteric coated, which means it has a longer lasting effect as it prevents dissolution in the stomach, enabling it to reach the lower digestive system where the supplement can be better absorbed. Although taking a supplement won’t make hair grow super fast, as the average speed of hair growth is about 1 cm per month, what does grow will look much better and be healthier and stronger. Also, getting regular haircuts will remove split ends, resulting in better looking hair overall from top to bottom.

Quality products equals quality looking hair.

Lastly, remember to use a good quality shampoo and conditioner. Avoid using products that contain sulphates and parabens. Even products that are more expensive or claim to be natural may contain these ingredients, so ensure you check the labels. When washing your hair, remember to shampoo twice. The first wash is for cleansing the hair, whilst the second is focused on moisturising from the mid-length down, so using two different shampoos is recommended.

If you also use a lot of product in your hair, try adding a teaspoon of bicarb soda to your shampoo when washing the first time. It helps clarify the hair and reduce the product buildup that occurs when using hairspray and waxes, and also helps minimise the silicon buildup from cheap shampoos that may have been used previously.

If your hair is in need of a trim or you would like advice on what products you should be using for your type of hair, we will happily do an assessment on your hair, check what condition it is in, and offer our professional recommendation on what products may be best suited to your needs. We love and recommend the Milkshake and EverEscents product ranges, which we stock at Peak-a-do and we believe they are very reasonably priced. We will also happily provide general advice on the type of products you may need if you wish to look for other suitable options elsewhere.
